BADGER CULL

In 2013, 1771 badgers were shot by the Government at a cost of £7 million

(£4,000 per badger) in pilot culls in Somerset and Gloucestershire.

Shot badgers were not tested for bTB but the Government's own figures

show that as few as 10% might have been infected with bTB.

Following a report by the Independent Expert Panel that the pilot culls were

"inhumane and ineffective", the Government has extended the pilot culls in

Gloucestershire and Somerset into 2014 without independent monitoring.

The Government states that the effective badger BCG vaccination is

too expensive. However, many charitable wildlife organisations already

have fully trained licenced badger vaccinators successfully vaccinating

badgers at a cost of only £25 per badger.
